One of the things I noticed about the Lexmark S 1620 is that it’s a rather cost effective printer when compared to other printers that have similar features. I have always felt frustrated when it was my turn to print and the printer ran out of paper, but it’s my guess that this should keep even the busiest office paper full for the whole day.

Lexmark printers have always had excellent print quality especially when it came to printing text. You wont come across any cutting edge features with this printer within its price range, but then again this printer itself does not have any cutting edge features. I also went ahead and gave the printer a spin using Lexmark S 1620 Toner to check out how well it did when I wanted to print out various types of documents that included both text as well as photos and illustrations.

We started by testing the printer with a number of text pages later followed by text and graphics mixed and after that just graphics to see how well it performed. Text reproduction of this printer was first-rate except for a few fonts that didn’t appear very good. In our graphics tests, colored graphics looked muddy while grayscale graphics looked fine. I wasn’t impressed with the time that the printer took to print out a picture. Some things looked perfect while others weren’t very impressive which led me to believe that it was a printer best suited for text and some low resolution graphics.

We wanted to also take the printer for a spin at its max resolutions using S 1620 Printer Cartridge. Before we could print the printer took awhile to warm up, but once it did the results were impressive and some of the text actually looked much better in higher resolutions. The printer didn’t slow down significantly, just a few seconds of a difference, however at times it printer as fast as when it was set at normal resolution.

The Lexmark S 1620 cartridge seems to have a very generous capacity of 1200 pages when it comes to print at high resolution. Normally we estimate that in a conventional office environment the cartridge should last fifteen days in smaller or home offices it should be thirty days. It also depends upon what print quality you put the printer at. Lexmark has always manufactured spacious toner cartridges and this one is no different.

The Lexmark Z 31 inkjet is not a printer to get excited about for its looks. As with many of the earlier Lexmark printers however, the curved and short design is at least practical, and allows for easy maintenance and change of Lexmark Z 31 printer ink. With just two buttons and LED lights making up the control panel, (to denote power and paper feed), and a simple folding paper tray the featureless casing does also allow for the product to be cleaned with no trouble.

Whilst drivers may need to be downloaded to ensure total compatibility with your PC, you should be ready to print within about 20 minutes of getting it out of the box.

As indicated earlier, there are certainly no bells and whistles offered with the printer. Many newer models have huge capacity paper bins, and intricate feeders to satisfy anything that is asked of them of course. That is not quite what you get with the Z 31. A simple top loading paper tray, with a capacity of just 100 sheets is provided. There are no upgrades available to boost this, though it does also allow for envelope and photographic printing. The Lexmark Z 31 does have a “Quick Print” mode that allows for up to eight pages per minute to be printed. This changes the resolution back to 600dpi, but does improve the speed significantly. However, colors can fade where pinks can appear to be more of a lavender color, blacks a darker shade of gray, and reds to appear orange. Whilst print quality is better in “Normal” mode, the colors can fade considerably here too.

The Lexmark Z 31 is further hindered by its minimal connection via parallel port with no serial port option, let alone the popular USB connectivity. It is also only easily compatible with Windows operating systems, though as mentioned earlier, XP and Vista drivers will need to be downloaded from the Internet.

It is not all bad. Far from it in fact, particularly considering the presence of the Lexmark “Accu-Feed” technology, which is still one of the most effective tools for reducing instances of snagging and blocking.

The compact design, and economy of the Lexmark Z 31 are also to be admired, particularly as cutting down on energy use is key for most people these days.
