An Ideal Workgroup Print Solution: Samsung CLP 600 Printer – Samsung CLP 600 Toner

This short article discusses the value of the Samsung CLP 600 Printer – Samsung CLP 600 Printer Toner Cartridge. The Samsung CLP 600 is a laser printer that prints in full color at a maximum resolution of an incredible 2400 X 600 dots per inch. It is a workgroup printer that handles letter size (81/2 X 11), legal size (81/2 X 13) transparencies, envelopes, labels and cards, and prints on plain paper or card stock. The dimensions of the unit in centimeters are 46.5 cm (width) X 46.5 cm (depth) X 44.5 cm (height). That’s 18.4 X 18.4 X 17.6 in inches.

The Samsung CLP 600 printer is not a lightweight SOHO unit. It weighs 28.5 kilograms, or 62.7 pounds. Language sim is SPL-C and the unit comes with the maximum amount of RAM, 32 megabytes, installed and a blazingly fast 250 MHz processor. The processor enables print speed of as high as 20 pages per minute legal size and 21 ppm for letter size. The media capacity in the feed tray is a whopping 350 sheets, with a monthly duty cycle of an amazing 45,000 pages.

Apple Mac 10.4 and 10.3 OS, Linux (SuSE OS 9.2 and 8.2; Red Hat OS 9.0 and 8.0 and all the usual OS suspects from Microsoft (98SE 2000, ME and XP) are supported operating systems. Best of all, the Samsung CLP 600 comes with Microsoft Server 2003 OS.

The Supported operating systems are Linux (Red Hat 9.0 and 8.0 and SuSE 9.2 and 8.2), Apple Mac (10.4 and 10.3) and Microsoft Windows (XP, 2000, ME and 98SE) and Server 2003. The inclusion of the Server2003 compatibility is important, because it allows the Samsung CLP 600 to plug directly into a LAN and act as its own print server.

For me, the plus points of the Samsung CLP 600 are the previously mentioned ability to directly connect to the LAN, eliminating the need for a print server, the 250 MHz processor and the standard 32 megs of RAM, and the 2400 X 600 dots per inch resolution. On the downside, it is not as fast as some other printers with a similar line-up of features and in the same price range. The average print speed in this feature/price market segment is 28 pages per minute (the CLP 600 is 21 for letter size, full color).

For a small business verging on the medium size business, if you have extremely high color print demands, this might be a good unit for you. No double-sided printing, by the way. But keep in mind – this is not a product designed for the SOHO market. There are other Samsung models that will suit you better.

With that said, the Samsung CLP 600 was one of the first next-generation printers aimed at the SME and Workgroup markets. There are tens of thousands of these guys churning out copy every day of the year. The CLP 600 is a good example of over-build, with a 4000 page capacity CLP 600 Toner, 32 megs of RAM and a 250 MHz processor.

The OEM Samsung CLP 600 Cartridge is still available, as are clones from a number of non-OEM manufacturers.
