There are several games consoles currently on the market, but one of the most popular is the Xbox 360 from Microsoft. The Xbox was the first videogame console to be introduced by Microsoft but since its launch it has experienced several technological developments. The Xbox 360 was the second Xbox model, introduced in 2005, and it has lots more features than the original model. Unfortunately since its launch many users have had problems with the console’s hardware. Some of the most commonplace problems are the 3-red light error and overheating.

The 3-red light error is when you get three flashing red lights in the power ring when there is an error. They are basically an indication of a problem or issue. When an error occurs the lights around the power button change from green to red, and they are a warning sign. They are now infamously called the “Red Rings of Death”!

There are a number of reasons for seeing the red light error but the most common is the console overheating. This occurs when the heat sinks are not able to properly cool the hot air created near the processor, in turn causing the processor to fail. Overheating could be due to a number of things. It can be caused by a surge in power consumption by the intercooler, which forces the motherboard to conduct larger current through its circuit, or alternatively it can be caused by bad chip components attached to the motherboard.

Overheating can cause the GUI to fail, which then causes the 3-red light error. As well as the three red lights round the power button an error message might show up on the screen. The error message will probably show up as E74 but it could also be a different error message.

There are a few measures that you can take to stop the red light from happening to start with. One of them is to make sure there is enough air circulating around the motherboard to keep it cool, so that it doesn’t overheat. You shouldn’t get the error if you can keep the temperature constant over a long period.

If you are unfortunate enough to experience the 3-red light error there are several ways you can repair it. You can send your console off to Microsoft but you’ll have to wait several weeks for it to be returned to you. On the other hand you could repair it yourself and save lots of time and cash.
